What a watch winder does
An automatic watch winds itself from the movement of your wrist: a weighted rotor spins and tightens the mainspring. Put the watch in a drawer and it stops once its power reserve runs out – typically 38 – 80 hours. A watch winder gently rotates the watch to keep it running, so the time, date and complications are always set when you pick it up.
Turns per day (TPD)
Every movement needs a certain number of rotor turns per day to stay fully wound. Most modern automatic watches need between 650 and 950 TPD; some need as few as 500, and certain high-demand movements need 1,200 or more. The manufacturer's manual or a winder brand's TPD database lists the exact figure for your model. Too few turns and the watch slowly runs down; too many is harmless because a slipping bridle prevents overwinding, but it adds unnecessary wear.
Turns per hour = TPD ÷ 24 · Example: 800 TPD ≈ 33 turns per hour
Rotation direction
Some movements wind in both directions; others only clockwise or counter-clockwise. Winding in the wrong direction does no harm, but it does nothing either. If you're unsure, bi-directional is a safe default – it winds every movement, just less efficiently for one-way rotors.
Do you need a winder?
| Situation | Winder? |
| One automatic watch worn every day | Not needed |
| Rotating 2 – 4 watches, simple time & date | Convenient, optional |
| Annual or perpetual calendar, moonphase | Strongly recommended |
| Collection of 5+ automatic watches | Multi-rotor winder |
| Hand-wound watches | Winders can't wind them |
Choosing a watch winder
- Programmable TPD (650 – 1,200+) and direction for each rotor, so different watches can share one box.
- Quiet motor – Japanese or Swiss motors are near-silent; important in bedrooms.
- Magnetic shielding – good winders shield the motor so watches aren't magnetized.
- Cushions that fit both small and large wrists without stressing the bracelet clasp.
- Power: mains adapters for always-on use; batteries for safes and travel.
- Size: buy one or two more rotors than you need today – collections grow.
Winder myths
Winders don't wear out a watch faster than wearing it would – a watch on a winder runs exactly as it would on your wrist. They also don't replace servicing: oils age whether or not the watch runs. Keep the winder away from speakers and other magnetic sources, and let watches rest occasionally if you prefer.
Frequently asked questions
How many turns per day does my watch need?
Most automatic watches need 650 – 950 TPD; 800 TPD bi-directional is the most common setting. Check your movement's specification for the exact figure.
Can a watch winder overwind a watch?
No. Automatic movements have a slipping mainspring bridle that prevents overwinding, but excessive TPD adds needless wear.
Is it bad to leave a watch on a winder all the time?
No more than wearing it every day. The watch runs normally and still needs regular servicing.
Which direction should I set my watch winder?
Use the direction specified for your movement; if unknown, bi-directional works for all automatic watches.
Do I need a winder for one watch?
If you wear it daily, no. A winder is most useful for collections and watches with calendar complications.
About SpinRate
SpinRate is an independent, free calculator for owners of automatic (self-winding) mechanical watches choosing and programming watch winders. We are not affiliated with any watch or winder manufacturer.
Every formula on this page runs entirely in your web browser. The numbers you type are never uploaded, stored or shared. Our goal is simple: give you an honest starting point so you can compare product specifications with confidence and avoid paying for capacity you do not need – or buying something too small to do the job.
The methodology combines widely published engineering rules of thumb, manufacturer data sheets and the electrical code practices that installers use every day. We review the assumptions regularly and update the calculator when typical product specifications change.
